Road to Infinity War - CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Retrospective

Welcome to the Road to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. This is my own little retrospective of each of Marvel Studios' films every week of 2018 and by the time I am done looking back at all of the MCU movies, Infinity War will be releasing in theaters in the U.S. on May 4 worldwide on April 27. I've already talked about IRON MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, IRON MAN 2, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, and THE AVENGERS to conclude Phase 1.

I have also completed Phase 2 with IRON MAN 3, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and ANT-MAN.

Now we move on to Phase 3. Up first is CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR...

Before we officially knew the title for this threequel would be CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Marvel Studios held a big press event in Los Angeles to announce their entire slate of Phase 3 films. Initially as a joke, studio head Kevin Feige revealed the title would be CAPTAIN AMERICA: SERPENT SOCIETY and it would lead off Phase 3. It wasn't until the end of the presentation when Feige came back around to reveal the title would actually be CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR... the crowd appropriately lost their collective minds at the reveal of the official title. (Note: Changes would come to the Phase 3 lineup and its movie release dates as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING would be added several months after this Phase 3 announcement event shifting many dates originally seen in the image below.)

The single biggest news to come out of this threequel was the inclusion and introduction of Spider-Man. While this news was announced over a year before Civil War released, it wasn't until about two months before the movie hit theaters when Marvel Studios released a trailer revealing actor Tom Holland in his Spidey suit for the first time (see trailer embed below). It was a jaw-dropping moment for many fans (myself included) to finally see Spider-Man alongside of the Avengers for the first time; and it was done with style by having Spidey steal Cap's shield at the end of the trailer.

Spidey, of course, got all the headlines but another big piece of news to come out of the development and pre-production of Civil War was that not only would Spider-Man make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, but Black Panther would as well. The World's first African superhero was about to get his time in spotlight and both the intros of T'Challa and Spidey were done so well it allowed the studio to bypass traditional origin stories for each of the heroes. For Spidey, because his origin had been played out in two previous franchises by Sony, and for Black Panther since his solo movie would not have to be about him learning about his powers, as well as becoming a hero, and then finally donning his super suit in the Third Act of a movie. Both heroes were already fully costumed and ready to take their respective place in the MCU, coincidentally on the side of Team Iron Man.

The marketing for Civil War was on point as it was more or less "Avengers 2.5" with so many heroes taking part in the battle of Team Iron Man vs. Team Captain America. The two separate hero teams allowed fans to choose which side they supported with many not even understanding the gravity of the changes the Avengers team would incur after the events of Civil War; which are still being felt today.

Actor Daniel Brühl was cast as the film's main villain Helmut Zemo, although fans who hoped he would don the familiar comic book attire of the villain would be disappointed. Yet, Zemo was one of the most intriguing villains seen in the MCU since he does not have any super powers, just his ability to manipulate all the Avengers into fighting each other. A psychological thriller where fans had no clue which direction the film would eventually go when its Third Act began and concluded with emotional results after Iron Man and Captain America fought.

On May 6, 2016, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opened in the domestic box office. It became Marvel Studios' third biggest opener (at the time) with $179 million; only behind THE AVENGERS ($207M) and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ($191M). It would go on to make $408 million, domestically, falling just short of the $409 million IRON MAN 3 took in three years prior.

Overseas, the threequel made $745 million proving that initial worries of the International appeal of a character called Captain America — back before CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER released — were now just silly talk. The Marvel Studios brand built a character into a worldwide powerhouse regardless of the word 'America' being in the title.

Worldwide, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR became the studios' fourth film to join the $1 billion club. It joined, at the time, THE AVENGERS ($1.5B), AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ($1.4B), and IRON MAN 3 ($1.2B). Civil War finished its theatrical run with $1.15 billion globally.

Its predecessor, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, was a game changer in the MCU when it came to the reveal that Hydra had been secretly functioning within S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades. And then Civil War proved to be another MCU game changer as Avengers teammates were now fractured and divided in two with some signing the Sokovia Accords and others refusing to do so and going underground. This will be addressed when all the heroes see each other again in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR to face-off against Thanos, his Black Order and their Outriders alien army.
