Road to Infinity War - IRON MAN 2 Retrospective

Welcome to the Road to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. This is my own little retrospective of each of Marvel Studios' films every week of 2018 and by the time I am done looking back at all of the MCU movies, Infinity War will be releasing in theaters in the U.S. on May 4. I've already talked about IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, so let's continue to IRON MAN 2...

Marvel Studios took 2009 off from releasing any film after releasing IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK in 2008. In 2010, IRON MAN 2 hit theaters and had high expectations after that little end credits scene with Nick Fury teasing the Avengers. If IRON MAN was the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, IRON MAN 2 opened up the universe to be much bigger with the introduction of both James Rhodes' War Machine suit as well as Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. the Black Widow.

I truly believe that IRON MAN 2 has gotten a bad rap for reasons I still don't understand to this very day. I like this sequel... a lot. You get to see War Machine and Iron Man fight side-by-side! While Whiplash was a subpar villain, he wasn't terrible. Actor Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer was a big highlight and the sequel's most enjoyable performance outside of Robert Downey Jr. as Stark. Rockwell brought such a fun swagger to his role that was a great to see, especially is his scenes with Tony. Fans also got to see a glimpse of a drunk Stark, which was an homage to the classic comic book story, 'Demon in a Bottle.'

When IRON MAN 2 opened on May 7, 2010 it took in $128 million, domestically. To this day that amount is still Marvel Studios' sixth largest opening weekend. Worldwide, the sequel took in $623 million which was a solid increase on the $585 million its predecessor made.

Unfortunately, fans and critics did not like this sequel as much as its predecessor to the tune of a 73-percent score on RottenTomatoes.com, as well as a 72-percent audience score. Heck, even on our own Marvel Studios Ultimate Fan Ranking List IRON MAN 2 is the lowest overall rated movie by fans online.

Again, I do not understand the hate for this movie and I find it a very enjoyable film. You get great performances out of your lead characters, yes even Mickey Rourke is great even though he hated being in this movie, and you get some massive cinematic universe building, too. What's really to hate here? I'm not sure I'll ever understand why so many dislike IRON MAN 2.
