Nick Fury's Story Arc in CAPTAIN MARVEL Comes into Focus

Right now, Marvel Studios is riding the wave of success that is BLACK PANTHER and at the same time they are preparing to unleash Thanos onto the Marvel Cinematic Universe in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in just a few weeks. And yet, the studio is still pushing forward with many more film projects in various stages of development and/or filming.

One of those projects is CAPTAIN MARVEL, which is currently filming. Starring actress Brie Larson in the title role as Carol Danvers, the movie will be based in the 1990s and see Samuel L. Jackson reprise his role as Nick Fury... albeit a two-eyed Nick Fury. It seems evident fans could witness how Fury loses his one eye in this film.

Studio president Kevin Feige spoke with Entertainment Weekly to tease a little bit more about Fury's story arc in the film.

"We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, 'You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.' Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel."

Feige also confirmed that "...much of the movie takes place in outer space." So while Fury's role is coming into focus a little bit better with this new information, it sounds like his role could be minimal; unless he journeys into space with Danvers, which would be fun but is still unknown right now.

CAPTAIN MARVEL releases in the U.S. on March 8, 2019.
