CAPTAIN MARVEL: Get to Know Carol Danvers

Carol Susan Jane Danvers first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes No. 13, in 1967, with Roy Thomas and Gene Colan as creators. Danvers was the oldest child of three in Boston and was raised to work as hard as she could. She had dreams of becoming an astronaut, but her family only had enough money to send one child to college. Despite having the best grades out of the other two siblings, Danvers' brother was chosen.

She decided to join the Air Force and become a pilot so she could get a college degree through the military. Danvers rose quickly due to her outstanding performances and combat skills. She was recruited into the intelligence field where she met Nick Fury.

Through her adventures with Nick Fury, Carol went on to meet Wolverine and other major characters in the Marvel Comics universe. During one of her adventures, Colonel Yon-Rogg kidnapped Danvers and her only hope of rescue was through a Kree Soldier, Captain Marvel. After Yon-Rogg’s Kree device explodes, Danvers becomes seriously injured. However, when she wakes up she realizes that she now has superhuman abilities as a result of the exposure to the explosion.

The explosion caused Danvers’ genetic structure to combine with Captain Marvel’s and she became part Kree. She became known as Ms. Marvel. For the time period, Ms. Marvel meant a lot and was associated with the feminist movement. Writers of the comic realized this and began to incorporate stories of Danvers fighting for rights like equal pay.

Ms. Marvel became Captain Marvel in her first appearance in Avenging Spider-Man No. 9, in 2011, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and shortly after began writing a new Danvers-led Captain Marvel comic in 2012. This is when Captain Marvel started to get a much bigger role in the Marvel Comics universe. Danvers was in strong support of Iron Man and the Superhero Registration Act in the comic universe version of 'Civil War.' However, she soon found herself fighting against Iron Man in Marvel Comics' 'Civil War 2.'

Captain Marvel has the power of flight, super strength, speed, stamina and durability; she can shoot energy bursts out of her fingertips.

Danvers, as Captain Marvel, has a huge role in the Marvel Comics universe and has been affiliated with many groups including the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., NASA, the Guardians of the Galaxy, U.S. Air Force and even the X-Men. In one storyline, the mutant terrorist Mystique kills Michael Barnet, who was Danvers’ boyfriend and this led to her involvement in the X-Men where she has had many adventures including traveling to space.

CAPTAIN MARVEL will be the first female superhero to get her own leading movie in Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe and it has a U.S. release date on March 8, 2019, starring Brie Larson in the title role as Danvers. Nick Fury will reportedly co-star in the movie, too. Fury could have the role of introducing Danvers to the crazy new world she now has to live in. Larson as Danvers will reportedly be introduced first in 2018's AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.
