THOR: RAGNAROK vs. JUSTICE LEAGUE Domestic Box Office Opening Weekend Prediction Showdown

THOR: RAGNAROK opens only two weeks ahead of JUSTICE LEAGUE so there is an inherent competitive angle between the box office opening projections for these two films, and their respective studios.

Just over a month ago, the first early projections for these movies hit the web with THOR: RAGNAROK projecting at an approximate $100 million opening weekend here in the U.S. This would be a big jump up when compared to the opening weekend numbers for its previous two films. THOR opened with $65 million and THOR: THE DARK WORLD took in $85 million.

Now, Variety is reporting that this $100 million prediction is staying the course when THOR: RAGNAROK opens on  November 3. Other reports claim Ragnarok could open as high as $125 million.

When the first THOR: RAGARNOK box office opening predictions came in it at the same time the first predictions for JUSTICE LEAGUE hit, too. The DC ensemble film was originally projecting an estimated $150 million opening, but Variety is now reporting JUSTICE LEAGUE may only open in the $110 million range, when it releases on November 17. Other reports claim it could open as high as $120 million.

This would be a huge blow to Warner Bros. if JUSTICE LEAGUE cannot open bigger than MAN OF STEEL ($116M), BATMAN V. SUPERMAN ($166M), or SUICIDE SQUAD ($133M). Especially since there are expectations in place that JUSTICE LEAGUE will finally be the DCEU movie that breaks the barrier achieving $1 billion worldwide. Not opening as big as BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, which failed to hit the $1B level, would not be a good start at attempting to accomplish their worldwide box office goal when adding three new DC heroes (Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg) into the mix.

On the flip side, if Marvel Studios' THOR: RAGNAROK can finish its box office run anywhere near the same worldwide total of JUSTICE LEAGUE, then that would be a huge win for them and another painful dose of reality for Warner Bros., who is coming off their first real period of DC movie positivity after the release of WONDER WOMAN over the summer.

It will be interesting to see how these two films play out in the box office next month.
