ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Production Teaser Music Might Hint at Some Spy Movie Genre Influence

Right now, Marvel Studios is in production on five upcoming movies: THOR: RAGNAROK (in post-production), BLACK PANTHER (in post), AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (in post), AVENGERS 4 (now filming) and now ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. That's quite the portfolio of film projects either in principle photography or already in post-production.

The newest addition to the list is ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, which began filming yesterday at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. In a fun teaser announcement video, tiny little production chairs for Ant-Man and the Wasp were shown on set.

But what is most notable in the video is its score. The music, which I believe is from the first movie, has a distinct spy movie genre sound and feel to it. It almost immediately reminded me of composer Michael Giacchino's score in Pixar's THE INCREDBILES. Pulling this snippet of music for this particular teaser seems like it could be a clue. (Maybe.... or I'm just reading into it too much.)

Now this is just one guy's speculation, but it seems like ANT-MAN AND THE WASP could get some of its genre influence from spy movies. The first ANT-MAN movie had influence from the heist movie genre and spy movies are closely related to those films making this a logical guess and fit for the sequel. (Click here to watch the teaser and to hear the score.)

To further my theory a little bit, Marvel Studios' first synopsis for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP sounds like the "urgent new mission" Scott Lang is recruited for by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym could very well be more along the lines of a surveillance and/or spy-like mission instead of continuing similar tropes of the first film's heist motif.

Here's its official synopsis, in case you missed it:

"In the aftermath of 'Captain America: Civil War,' Scott Lang (Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past."

Until Marvel Studios, director Peyton Reed, actor Paul Rudd or anyone else connected to this sequel confirms it, this needs to be considered as nothing more than one guy's opinion at the moment.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP releases in the U.S. on July 6, 2018.
