JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN Profile: Get to Know Mera, Queen of the Seas

Jack Miller and Nick Cardy created Mera and she first appeared in Aquaman No. 11 (September 1963). Mera comes from “Dimension Aqua” which is in the Bermuda Triangle where Atlantean exiles live in the colony of Xebel.

In her first appearance, Mera came from Xebel, a watery dimension to escape Leron, the leader of a violent revolt against her. Mera fled to Earth with the help of her loyal chief scientist. On Earth, she met Aquaman and they fell in love. Mera and Leron met once again when she needed a healing machine from Xebel. Mera and Leron fought and Leron was easily defeated and left in a vegetative state.

In another origin story, Mera was tasked with the mission to kill Aquaman and was trained to pass through the dimensional barrier so she could assassinate him. However, she learned she had been lied to about the “evil” Atlantis and changed her mind about Aquaman and fell in love with him.

Mera and Aquaman’s love has survived through the ages and they even had a son named Arthur Curry Jr. Unfortunately, the two lost their only son when Black Manta kidnapped their child and put him in a tank of poison. This led to troubles between couple and they separated resulting in Aquaman leaving Atlantis. Later, when Aquaman returned to Atlantis, she attacked him out of anger and the two fought. Their fight resulted in Mera being impaled and was believed to be dead, but she left the Earth realm and returned to Dimension Aqua.

Mera is Queen of the Seas and rules alongside her husband, Aquaman. Her powers include super strength, durability, enhanced sense and the ability to control water all while being able to breathe underwater, too. She is extremely efficient in hand-to-hand combat and, in the comics, is said to be stronger than Wonder Woman. Mera is a skilled assassin and a natural leader. In combat, she wears a green full body suit that protects her from bullets.

Mera is set to make her live-action debut in the upcoming DC Extended Universe film, JUSTICE LEAGUE. It is still unknown what her origin will be in the movie. Judging from the JUSTICE LEAGUE trailers, she will not play a major role in the upcoming film.

If I had to guess, she will probably cameo alongside Aquaman and will convince him to trust Batman and join the superhero team. Mera will be played by actress Amber Heard and she will also be appearing in the solo AQUAMAN movie where she will hopefully be given a larger role. Either way, it will be interesting to see how these strange and fantastic characters are brought to life through JUSTICE LEAGUE director Zack Snyder and AQUAMAN director James Wan’s vision.
