Through Friday THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is Falling Short of its Domestic Opening Predictions

Well... any hope for THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE doing better than it was expected to perform is quickly diminishing as it has been meet with lower Friday box office numbers than pretty much everyone thought. This is not to say the film won't be a huge hit when the dust settles, but out of the gate the arrow is angled somewhat down.

Going into this weekend the projections ranged from as low as a $60 million domestic opening to as high as $75 million. After bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is trending for an approximate $52 million domestic opening (via BoxOfficeMojo). It is a solid opening weekend number, especially since its production budget is reportedly a low (for animated movie standards) $80 million, but it is much less than its predecessor, THE LEGO MOVIE, which opened to $69 million.

The shocking thing about this is that THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE has received very, very good reviews and currently sits with a 91-percent score on RottenTomatoes. Good reviews usually equate to exceeding opening weekend box office predictions as well as solid word-of-mouth. The latter is obviously still in play.

The real question is how good will the animated movie's long term success be in the coming weeks.

Maybe Saturday and Sunday's numbers will improve things, but we have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see how things play out for the opening weekend tally of THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE.
