Talking About the Drama Surrounding THE FLASH Movie

THE FLASH movie is back to square one after losing its director (for the second time in six months) to the increasingly popular “creative differences” conflict. [Editor note: Losing its latest director is rumored to potentially delay production and perhaps its March 23, 2018 release date, too.] This could not come at a worse time for Warner Bros. and DC as they desperately need to win back the confidence of comic book audiences.

It is just a flat out terrible look for Warner Bros. who has quickly gained the reputation of being difficult to work with due to constant interference which directly affects the final product. After all the talk of studio interference in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD, there is a real lack of faith in the future.

Almost every movie deals with “rumors” of issues or disagreements during production along with rewrites and reshoots at some point. If the movie is a success, these problems are quickly forgotten. Unfortunately, this has not been the case with the past few DCEU movies.

Any goodwill they had left is definitely gone now. Very few fans will give them the benefit of the doubt here and with good reason: They don’t deserve it. THE FLASH has now lost two directors, most recently DOPE Director Rick Famyuiwa. It is a tough loss since many were hoping he would bring a tone to the DCEU and show the fans something truly different. This comes just two months after Erza Miller was praising Famyuiwa's vision while commenting on how well everything was going.

The cast has been quick to comment on the departure, both Miller and Kiersey Clemons expressed their disappointment in losing the talented director. Clemons even mentions that Famyuiwa was a big part of the reason she got involved with this project. The stars claim they are still confident in the process and overall vision for the movie but it is truly hard to believe at this point. The next director will certainly have his or her hands full piecing this broken project back together. THE FLASH is too great of a character to make his big screen solo movie debut with a messy film.

Despite all the negativity there are still a few bright spots. The most important being the Phil Lord and Chris Miller script is still there and those guys really know how to write. Everything they touch turns into a critical and commercial success so the team behind THE FLASH should lean heavily on their writing. The dream scenario would be bringing on Lord and Miller to direct, but that duo is crazy busy right now with the HAN SOLO Star Wars standalone movie so that seems highly unlikely. Another positive is the cast remains untouched even with the tumultuous development and pre-production. The combination of up-and-coming actors combined with veteran performers should help to prop this movie up.

Warner Bros. is in need of a win in a big way and it looks like they can’t rely on THE FLASH for that at the moment. The only bright spot for DC right now is the most recent WONDER WOMAN trailer and even that has been darkened a bit with recent rumors of production issues. While the trailer is fantastic, we have seen awesome trailers from Warner and DC before. We know they can put together a 2-3 minute clip show and get fans excited. That just isn’t enough anymore, we need an incredible final project.

Unfortunately since the next DCEU installment doesn’t come out until summer 2017 with WONDER WOMAN, that big win may not come for a while. The best we can hope to settle for is no more bad news and maybe a few good early reviews to keep some hope alive.
