DC is Critic-Proof: SUICIDE SQUAD Opens Thursday Night With Huge $20.5 Million Domestic Take [UPDATED]

Are you are having DC movie déjà vu yet? Well... you should be.

SUICIDE SQUAD, just like BATMAN V. SUPERMAN in March, has been critically panned in its reviews to the tune of it having a score on RottenTomatoes.com equal to BATMAN V. SUPERMAN at 29-percent (at the time this post was published). But, as with BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, moviegoers are ignoring the critical hate and flocking to theaters to see SUICIDE SQUAD for themselves anyway. (As it should be, see it for yourself and make your own opinion.)

Initial Thursday night estimates have hit, via THR, for SUICIDE SQUAD and it has brought in $20.5 million in domestic box office ticket sales. To compare some of 2016's other super hero movie Thursday night openings: BATMAN V. SUPERMAN opened to $27M, DEADPOOL brought in $12M and CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR had $25M.

UPDATE: SUICIDE SQUAD has brought in an estimated $29.6M in its first two days of International release, per Variety.

This is total déjà vu like it's the end of March all over again because things are mirroring BATMAN V. SUPERMAN so closely this could be the normal DC Extended Universe trend moving forward. Critical hate, followed by a huge first weekend opening, followed by... a big drop-off in its second weekend? It remains to be seen if SUICIDE SQUAD will have a second weekend drop similar to BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, but if this is in fact a trend then don't be shocked if there is a big drop-off.

SUICIDE SQUAD was estimated to bring in between $125M – $140M domestically this weekend and it seems like it will open big and on the higher side of that weekend projection.
