Why a 'Soft Reboot' of SUPERMAN Should be the Plan in JUSTICE LEAGUE

Ever since 'The Death of Superman' comic book storyline was shoehorned into BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE fans have been wondering how Superman would be brought back from the dead. Since there is a 0.00-percent chance Kal El does not rejoin the land of living it will be interesting to see how death has changed the Man of Steel.

Unless Snyder decides to make Superman one of the bad guys he really can't get much darker than fans have seen in BvS and MAN OF STEEL. So we can assume this will (hopefully) lead to a lighter, more familiar Superman. Using his demise as a jumping off point for a 'soft reboot' of the character really makes a lot of sense, especially with all the recent criticisms.

Even Superman can't go through an event like this and come out the other side the same person seen in the last two films. After all his internal conflict about the human race and whether or not he should get involved in the affairs of mankind, he made the ultimate decision to sacrifice himself to save the world. This is easily his truest Superman moment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) thus far. There is no going back from this and he has to remain the type hero who preserves life at all costs.

Clark’s sacrifice clearly stirred something in Bruce Wayne and it looks to be a part of the motivation behind Batman forming the Justice League, along with the Flash’s cryptic message to Bruce in BvS. Most of Bruce’s scenes portray him as a worn and hardened vigilante who seems to have lost his faith in the people he once sought to protect. Superman’s selfless actions should directly lead to the creation of one of the most powerful forces in the universe, the Justice League. Inspiring people is a huge part of what makes Superman the great hero he is and this is an excellent start to a new and improved Son of Kypton.

At this point in the DCEU a shift in tone is inevitable and the shift starts with Superman. As a character who represents hope, the decision to rarely have him smile or show feelings of joy has been an odd one. It’s clear something inside this Superman needs to drastically change after his resurrection. To showcase his lighter side, Snyder will need to actually show the audience this change and the best way to do that is through Lois Lane.

Lois is a big part of what keeps Superman grounded and tied to the human race. The few scenes where Clark actually cracks a smile are with Lois. Showcasing their relationship will really help in establishing Superman’s newfound resolve. After all she is heart and that is what people want to see, a Superman with heart.

We need a Superman who sees the best in people and never loses hope in the planet that raised him. He has to be the face of the Justice League, the one who makes the entire world trust them as their protectors. The entire DCEU relies on this possibility of a 'soft reboot' of Superman.

Let’s hope we will now finally get the best possible version of him.

JUSTICE LEAGUE is currently filming in London and releases on November 17, 2017.
