Mads Mikkelsen Teases His Antagonist Role in DOCTOR STRANGE

Marvel Studios' next new addition to their ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is DOCTOR STRANGE, which releases in theaters on November 4. Marvel's track record of releasing unknown characters in a tentpole movie to the general audience has been solid after the recent releases of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ANT-MAN. Both were risky properties at release that did so well in their respective releases that the studio green light sequels for both.

DOCTOR STRANGE has been around since his first introduction in the comic book 'Strange Tales' No. 110 in 1963. However, he has never been as big of a hero name as Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man and the Avengers so his first film, without an intro in another MCU film, is also being looked at as somewhat of a risk.

The Marvel Studios brand is stronger than ever right now and this fact, along with lead Benedict Cumberbatch being one of the hottest actor names in Hollywood, gives DOCTOR STRANGE a leg up on already being a successful launch to a new MCU franchise. Although, not much is really known about the movie except what was seen in its first teaser trailer.

One of the biggest unknowns is who Mads Mikkelsen has playing in the movie. It's widely believed that he is the main villain, yet the actor continues to say his character should not be perceived as being a true villain and he is more of an opponent of Stephen Strange.

Mikkelsen has again teased his role in DOCTOR STRANGE to Yahoo! UK.

“He’s not a villain in that way – he’s a man who believes in something else than the hero. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he’s not necessarily wrong.”
