DOCTOR STRANGE: Get to Know the Sorcerer Supreme

Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange, or Doctor Strange, is a powerful sorcerer who first appeared in Strange Tales No. 110 in July 1963 and was created by Steve Ditko. Steve Ditko also co-created Spider-Man and several of Spidey’s iconic villains including Electro, Lizard, Vulture and many others.

Stephen Strange earned a medical degree at Columbia University and he was praised for being an expert surgeon. Stephen’s huge success turned him into a very selfish person. He would only care about patients who could completely pay their bill and he was not sympathetic to them at all. However, Stephen’s medical career soon came to an end after a major car accident severely damaged the nerves in his hands.

Stephen was devastated after the accident but was too self-centered to accept a job as a consultant, assistant surgeon, or teacher. Instead, Stephen spent his fortune looking for a treatment for his hands. After many failed attempts, Stephen heard rumors of someone called the Ancient One, a person with mystical powers. Desperate for the repair of his hands, Stephen used the last of his money and headed for the Himalayas to seek out the Ancient One.

After much traveling, he found the Ancient One’s Tibetan palace. He begged for the Ancient One to cure his hands, but the Ancient One refused because of Stephen’s selfishness. Soon after, Stephen discovers that the Ancient Ones disciple, Baron Mordo, was planning to kill the Ancient One. Stephen attempted to stop him and warn the Ancient One, but the Ancient One was aware of Mordo's plot. The Ancient One was impressed with Stephen’s selfless act and offered to teach him the mystic arts.

Seven years later, Stephen completed his training and became the Supreme Sorcerer. His training including mastering the discipline of martial arts and sorcery. He then moved back to New York and used his home, the Sanctum Sanctorum, as his base of operations. Strange’s training has allowed him to create energy projection and manipulation, transform matter, teleport, cast illusions, travel through dimensions and much more. All of his abilities are still unknown because he is so powerful. While all-powerful, his powers are less effective against science-based opponents.

Doctor Strange also has his Cloak of Levitation that allows him to fly, his Eye of Agamotto that allows him to reflect evil magic and the Orb of Agamotto that he can use as a crystal ball. He keeps all of his powerful artifacts inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, which is protected by magic and guarded by his personal assistant, Wong.

Judging from the teaser trailer of Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE, it looks like the origin of Stephen Strange will be ripped right out of the comic book. It also looks like we will be able to see Stephen’s transformation from a rich and selfish surgeon to a desperate and poor man constantly looking to cure his hands. In the trailer you can also see Stephen traveling the world for this cure and discovering the Ancient One. The teaser trailer ends with Doctor Strange walking up the stairs of the Sanctum Sanctorum wearing his Cloak of Levitation and all-powerful as the Sorcerer Supreme.

DOCTOR STRANGE will be released on November 4 with Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange.
