“You show a caveman fire and I had almost 200 years to figure out how to strike the flame.”
We’re getting down to the end here, the final act of our story that has been the first season of LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. We all know about the highs and the lows this show has faced, it’s usually common. But what isn’t always common is for a show to really “get it” in its last few episodes. This show may finally snap to it and focus on the story and the characters greatly in its final few episodes.
From the beginning, I was really enamored with the way the episode and the story in its entirety, was paced. Besides the flashbacks, I think keeping the story mostly inside the ship was really the right thing to do. It helped me personally as a viewer to get more into these characters in their final act to stop Savage.
Even after he was captured by the team and sitting in a cell, Casper Crump really brought his A game as Savage in this episode. His performance tonight really proved my point that he was a little underutilized as a villain in this season. I don’t have much critiques over his character, I thought it all was great. Everything from his dialogue that really made you believe what he was saying, to the camera angles on him that resonated thoughts of Hannibal Lector and Darth Vader. Even though you would probably know this if you were familiar with the history of Savage, I liked that it was made known that he was a master of time all along. It just makes this character bigger and more of a threat in the upcoming Season 2 and beyond.
I like where Rip was at in this episode, but it all felt a little predictable. When it comes to a man’s love for his family, we all could probably realize that they would come first, even over his teammates. Same goes with the Time Masters. It was kind of obvious all along that The Time Masters had no worry about Savage and could possibly be in cahoots with him. It will be pretty refreshing next season when Rip is 100-percent anti-Time Master.
Although I don’t want to see the end of Firestorm, I was really taken back by where this episode put Dr. Stein and Jax. It really showed the characters growing care for each other. It expands on who they are and how far they’ll go for one another. Could this mean we could see Ronnie Raymond as a possible new member for Season 2?
Since this was an episode that was primarily character driven in the scenes with Savage in his cell, someone else who really brought it was Ray Palmer. I liked that Ray had enough confidence to stand toe to toe with Savage without his Atom suit. It really showed that Ray Palmer is a strong character and one of the pillars of the DC TV superhero universe. I hope Brandon Routh really brings it like he did in this episode in Season 2.
I still can’t say much about Kendra or Carter anymore. Much of the Hawk related stuff just seems like a distraction. It’s hard for me to ever really bash any of the characters on the DC TV shows because I love them so much. But I think the way they handled Hawkman and Hawkgirl this season has just been a mistake. They brought these characters in at the expense of Vandal Savage and made their stories so dependent on him when they should have been separate entities entirely.
Freestyle thoughts from tonight’s episode:
- “Leonard Snart, robber of ATMs” may have been one of my favorite lines of dialogue all season. Sometimes these CW shows can be written very poorly and sometimes it’s just fantastic.
- I really hope we see some new team members next season, at least 3-4. And I’m still not counting out Connor Hawke and Constantine.
- I could get behind Sara in the captain’s chair of The Waverider. I just hope it’s not at the expense of screen time for Rip.
- The CW, take all my money to make a Heatwave and Captain Cold show, please please please.
- I think I’ll be ready when we don’t see much of The Time Masters anymore.
