ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Will be About Hope van Dyne Becoming a Hero

ANT-MAN was once considered a big risk for Marvel Studios due to it being a lesser known character with a silly name and because of pre-production drama when its director was replaced right before filming was set to begin. And as the studio has done time and time again, it proved all the doubters wrong by jump-starting a new tentpole franchise as Marvel green lit its sequel, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP.

Actor Paul Rudd gets to reprise his role as Scott Lang / Ant-Man in next month's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and there was an early draft of the script which had Evangeline Lilly's Janet Van Dyne / Wasp included in Civil War. But Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told SlashFilm he wanted to save Wasp for the ANT-MAN 2 instead.

"We did [talk about it]. Wasp was in early versions of that [big fight] sequence as well, but we said, ‘We want to save that for Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ because that’s so much what the movie is going to be about: her as a hero. We also wanted… Joe and Anthony [Russo] said they needed something big to turn the battle, and that just seemed like the greatest way to do that."

The studio head went on to confirm Rudd is currently working on the sequel's script while talks are ongoing to bring ANT-MAN director Peyton Reed back to helm the next movie.

"I can’t say [what genre], but certainly we are in early days now of working on it. Paul Rudd is working on that story as we speak with Peyton Reed. We certainly want to stay true to what made it so unique and different, and we’ll see how that comes together."

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP has plenty of time to develop its script as it won't start filming until summer 2017. The movie is scheduled to release on July 6, 2018.
