BATMAN V. SUPERMAN Director Zack Snyder Discusses the Robin Suit in the Batcave

As you may have noticed in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE — and first shown in one of its trailers before its theatrical release — Bruce Wayne has a graffitied Robin suit hanging in the Batcave.

The markings on the suit clearly show that Batman, and Robin, have had an unfortunately run-in with the Joker prior to the events of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN. But what actually happened still is not known.

Director Zack Snyder spoke with IGN to briefly touch on the topic.

“In my mind, it was that Robin had died 10 years earlier, during some run-in with a young Joker. So there was a fun backstory there to play with. I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. In a weird way, he had sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t really have a life outside the cave. I thought that including Robin, a dead Robin, was helping us understand that he’s been on quite a little journey.”

Batman has most definitely been on some journey prior to BATMAN V. SUPERMAN but what that really entails is still unknown. Perhaps the confirmed Ben Affleck-written solo BATMAN movie script could take fans back to a time before BATMAN V. SUPERMAN to tell the story of how Robin was killed. Or perhaps it could be a flashback sequence in an eventual BATMAN solo movie.

As of right now, this new comment by Snyder is the only clue to what went down. As the DC Extended Universe grows at some point in the future this event will be revealed.
