AGENT CARTER Season 2 Episode 4: A Villainess Realizing Her Evil Potential

With the ending of last week’s episode of AGENT CARTER, it was nice to dive directly in to see what the SSR gang has been up to. It basically picks up where we left off. Howard is still M.I.A. (no doubt being distracted by a woman or women), Peggy and Jarvis are still looking for their assassin and poor Jason is just doing his best to figure out another way to get back to this physical plane.

Meanwhile, Peggy and Jarvis decide to go assassin hunting which ends in the capture of the assassin who attacked them, Rufus Hunt. Apparently, Jarvis has to sometimes tranquilize Stark’s panda when he gets out of hand, so they used his stash. Which still took two darts and a knock out by Peggy to subdue him.

Sousa joins them as Peggy tries to lie about what they were doing. The women was a spy, how can she not lie? Sousa and Peggy interrogate Hunt and fake him out by pretending to inject him with a strain of maker is which according to Peggy is just going to give him an "intense cold." It works. Hunt spills the beans and tells her to listen to the recorded meetings they have at the club. So much for a hardcore assassin. Their raid attempted is derailed by Vernon Masters who audits the L.A. branch of the SSR and talks subtly threatens Peggy and her friends after she won't reveal Hunt as her source.

But it ain't over till it's over. Hunt "escapes" and Sousa, Peggy, a body-less Jason and Jarvis (who actually leaves to perform butler-y duties) listen in on his conversation with Whitney Frost and Calvin Chadwick. A conversation that ends in our villainess, who has been performing Zero Matter experiments, taking care of the problem by using the Zero Matter to eradicate Hunt. This effectively scares the crap out of her husband and encourages his silence. The SSR gang are seriously confused, but will ultimately propel Peggy into figuring out what happened in that house.

Jason is also starting to feel some of the effects of his situation. He feels a pull to the Zero Matter and knows it’d be easy to pull away. Peggy effectively assures him they are both fighters and will help him get back to this plane. Let’s face it, Jason is cute and likeable, but Whitney will most likely be coming after Peggy and what better way to wound her than to kill her beau. Here’s hoping that I’m wrong.

We also got a fleeting moment that Sousa looked jealous of Peggy and Jason. I believe it’s time for him to make a move or get over it. He has an almost fiance, didn’t tell Peggy and now decides to be jealous. Now is definitely not the time for a love square.

Throughout the episode, we definitely see the differences in Whitney's and Peggy's upbringing through flashbacks, but also the similarities. They are two differences sides of the same coin. Both of these women were stifled in their abilities. Whitney was brilliant and was constantly berated by her mother that no one would care for her intelligence and she should only use her beauty. Peggy was constantly told to be a lady and was only pushed to become a field agent by the death of her brother, the only person who encouraged her not to pretend to be someone else and be the fighter she is. These similarities bring up the clear realization that Peggy could’ve easily been in Whitney’s footsteps had it not been for the encouragement of her brother and her moral center. Perhaps their similar circumstances will give Peggy a good argument to help her instead of end her.

However, I’m impatient and finally want to see a real showdown between Peggy and Whitney. Also, when will we ever see Dottie again? Dottie has become something of a fan favorite with her obsession of Peggy and super spy skills. It’d be nice to see her escape and come to L.A. or even try to bargain with the FBI to see Peggy again. My only complaint is that the first season had a faster pace and they seem to be taking their time this season, because of the two episode extension. Hopefully with the emergence of Whitney’s powers, the show will gain momentum and we will see the plot thicken.
