Editorial: George Lucas is Being More Like Anakin Skywalker Than He Realizes When Whining About Star Wars
"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
You most likely heard this saying, or some form of it, several times in your life. Sadly, it seems like Star Wars creator George Lucas has not heard this at any point during his life. This is sad because I will always have a place in my heart for Lucas since Star Wars was a huge part of my childhood in the early 80s. Now, I hate that since STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has been out, Lucas keeps saying dumb sh*t about the direction his former company Lucasfilm, and Disney, have taken his former franchise.
Don't get me wrong, I completely understand that Star Wars is Lucas' baby. Heck, I kind of consider Star Wars my baby as well since it had such a strong influence on me as a child. But reading some of Lucas' new comments about Disney and what they've done with Star Wars has me thinking Lucas is butthurt and more like the Anakin Skywalker of the prequels than he realizes.
Again, I mean no disrespect to Lucas but shut the hell up! And this is what set me off on this editorial rant...
"If you had any doubt about how Lucas feels about his Star Wars films, he goes on to call them his 'kids' and then says, 'I sold them to the white slavers that takes these things, and [laughs],' before wisely choosing to stop following that line of thought."
This passage was taken from a Collider.com post about Lucas ranting about what is happening with his Star Wars franchise. Sounds like a crybaby. He also said the following.
“They looked at the stories, and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans’….They decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing….They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway — but if I get in there, I’m just going to cause trouble, because they’re not going to do what I want them to do. And I don’t have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up. And so I said, ‘Okay, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way.'
“They wanted to do a retro movie. I don’t like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."
Lucas is the genius who created Star Wars, there's no doubting this at all, but he needs to take a cue from someone like... writer/director Edgar Wright and say nothing at all after leaving a franchise. Wright worked on ANT-MAN for nearly a decade and left the production right before principle photography began. However, Wright hasn't said a bad thing about ANT-MAN or Marvel Studios since he left. Meanwhile, Lucas is sounding all pissy that Disney and J.J. Abrams went away from his original plans for Episodes VII-IX and are making bank in the box office.
If Lucas is this emotional about Star Wars, then why sell it at all in the first place? He seems to have gotten a bad case of seller's remorse, or something, and he really needs to get over it quick because there will be a new Star Wars movie releasing every year through 2020.
Hopefully Lucas can begin learning to say nothing at all soon. Very soon.
UPDATE: Since this editorial was published Lucas has issued an apology via THR stating he misspoke (a.k.a. damage control).
I want to clarify my interview on the Charlie Rose Show. It was for the Kennedy Center Honors and conducted prior to the premiere of the film. I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize. I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of JJ and Kathy.
