D23 Expo: DOCTOR STRANGE Concept Art Observations

Marvel Studios made it feel like an earthquake was taking place inside of Hall D23 at Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim. The studio started off by revealing concept art for DOCTOR STRANGE, which starts filming in London this November.

As of the publishing of this article, no concept art has been revealed to my knowledge but I'm also typing this while sitting here in the hall before Star Wars reveals are made.

Here are some bullet points about what was seen in the DOCTOR STRANGE concept art (quotes are paraphrased based on what was remembered):

  • Cumberbatch recorded a quick video intro and teased a "mind-blowing experience, [a] girls [reference?], cars, explosions and other realms.”
  • He then said how is he lucky to be a part of this movie and the MCU.
  • Concept imagery was shown of floating cars that looked like it came out of Inception and/or Matrix movies.
  • Based on how things were shown, there will be a little bit of an origin story (think similar to ANT-MAN) in order to tell Strange's path to becoming Doctor Strange.
  • Very trippy visual design which is a bit hard to describe but looks like inter-dimensional type of stuff is about to happen in the MCU.
  • Director Scott Derrickson also said, in his pre-recorded voiceover during the concept art, "He's on a quest looking for healing. Looking for a way to recover [from damaging his hands]... meets the Ancient One who helps him heal and that become so much more."
  • An image of Cumberbatch as Strange was shown and he looks monk-like with grey hair at his temples, what looked like a big ol' collar and a red cape. The costume shown definitely reflects the darker nature of this movie and definitely has a modern comic book appearance vibe to it.

DOCTOR STRANGE releases on November 4, 2016.
