KANG and the SHI'AR Movie Rights Confirmed to be Owned by Fox, Not Marvel Studios

As time goes on and more Marvel movies are released, fans are learning which properties are not owned by Marvel Studios because they are under the old movie licensing agreement with 20th Century Fox.

In a Facebook post by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY writer/director James Gunn, the movie rights ownership of Kang the Conquerer and the Shi'Ar Empire have been revealed to be with Fox, not Marvel Studios.

"Shi'ar and Kang are both owned by Fox. All decisions about who is in GotG2 were made a long time ago."

The Shi'ar Empire shouldn't be a surprise to comic book readers because they are closely linked to the X-Men books and the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix story arcs. [To read more about the Shi'ar, click here.]

But Kang is a fan favorite and he was first introduced as Kang the Conquerer in the pages of the Avengers comics. However, he was originally introduced as Rama-Tut in Fantastic Four comics earlier than his appearance in Avengers. [To read more about Kang, click here.]

So there you have it, straight from the man who is one of the most candid and honest (as he is allowed to be) at Marvel Studios.
