Speculation: What Happens in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON That Leads to IRON MAN vs. CAPTAIN AMERICA and Civil War
Marvel's Civil War is coming to the big screen and everything will change after it. Everything changed when SHIELD fell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and big changes seems to be coming again in Captain America 3.
Reported to be loosely based on the Civil War comic book story arc, Captain America 3 appears to be pitting Iron Man vs. Captain America. Their roles seem to be shifting from Tony Stark not believing in government structure leading up to this point and being a one-man show as Iron Man, while Rogers has been a government soldier who follows orders. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has progressed so far, it seems apparent that Stark is becoming the guy who needs government structure in place while Rogers is losing faith in everything with SHIELD falling to Hydra.
An interesting overall plot twist for Phase 3, for sure. So let me throw some speculation around and spitball some logical guesses in the next few paragraphs.
It seems that what's being implied in the MCU right now is Stark's mental state is fragile. After The Avengers, he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but he overcomes that in Iron Man 3. However, in Avengers: Age of Ultron is he is creator of Ultron and Ultron tries to kill humanity to take over Earth. This messes up Stark's head again and he becomes one for needing a government structure in place to regulate the super hero community. This begins a Civil War between Stark and Rogers.
Per various reports, Captain America 3 will allegedly be called either 'Captain America: Civil War' or 'Captain America: Fallen Son.' If it is the latter, then do not expect Rogers to die as he did in the comic story arc of Fallen Son. Instead, his fall would be that of going into hiding and not believing in Stark's plans and thus stepping down as Cap. Then someone else (like the Winter Soldier) could step in and take the shield.
Or perhaps, Stark wants to arrest the Winter Soldier for his crimes of past assassinations (some fans have suggested the Winter Soldier could have killed Howard Stark which is very plausible), while Rogers wants to save his old friend. This could be the catalyst of Civil War between the two Avengers.
A final piece of speculation that I have is to say how Thanos seems to be getting pushed back to Phase 4 and after Avengers 3. This is fine with me because it gives Stark, Rogers and other heroes who may be on opposite sides of the Civil War time to unite and become a team again in Avengers 4 or a giant Infinity Gauntlet movie ensemble event.
