Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE Movie Not an Origin Story?

The rumor mill has taken a break from all the Star Wars rumors over the last few days to focus on Disney's other huge franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More specifically, Doctor Strange.

At the beginning of August, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked about Marvel's soon-to-be-green-lit Doctor Strange movie. He spoke about how it's one of Marvel's best origin tales.

"With Strange, it is a classic Marvel origin story because he’s got one of the best origins ever. And it’s our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural. Now, what is the definition of supernatural? It varies. We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. The very sort of crazy – [Steve] Ditko crazy acid trip way of traveling through dimensions and traveling through other realms is something that we think is very, very cool … playing with the perceptions of reality."

Now there is potentially a conflicting report about Doctor Strange. This comes from BadAssDigest.com's Devin Faraci, who dropped a mini-scoop that he was told about Doctor Strange during an episode of Meet The Movie Press.

"So, for Doctor Strange they've had a script in-house forever... It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It's got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That's all gone. Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Doctor Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Doctor Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script. [Writer] Jon Spaihts is working totally new, on his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script."

Editor Note: If you don't know what "medias res" means it's a narrative, story telling technique which takes the story straight to the middle point instead of telling its beginning/origin.

The reason this new info from BadAssDigest.com might be conflicting is due to the fact Feige specifically said Doctor Strange is a classic origin story. However, it needs to be stated that while Feige has spoke about Doctor Strange for well over a year now — and has spoke about how great Strange's origin tale is — he never confirmed it will actually be an origin tale. So perhaps BadAssDigest.com is correct.

In the end, you have to take what Feige says as truth while everything else is rumor... at least for now.
