CAPTAIN AMERICA 3: Is There Any Chance at RED SKULL Returning?

When it comes to Captain America films, when of the things talked about a lot is the eventual return of the Red Skull. Last seen being swept away by the power of the Tesseract at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, the Red Skull's re-appearance is coming. But most likely by another actor and not by Hugo Weaving, who said he does not want to return to the role.

Back in July (2014), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted about an eventual return of Red Skull to IGN.

"Well, the way we showed his 'demise' in The First Avenger was to showcase to people that he could perhaps pop up again sometime. I honestly don't know when or where that would be. Of course, given all the Hydra hubbub in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and, by extension, Agents of SHIELD, it stands to reason that there might be room for a Red Skull return down the line."

The villain's name has been brought back up but this time to Captain America 3 directors Anthony and Joe Russo, in an interview with ScreenRant.com. The Russos couldn't say much about the villain, due to being deep into the development process of the next Cap film, but did have this to say:

"We can’t really comment specifically in terms of where we’re going with it, just because we don’t want to spoil anything for anybody. But certainly, look. That’s the great thing about the Marvel universe, is anything is possible. All these characters exist. And as we’ve seen on the publishing side, there’s very inventive, creative ways to make characters relevant again and surprising ways to make the characters relevant again. He’s a great character. Whether or not he finds his way back I can’t really say."

While no new information was disclosed, it's nice to know that some things just can't be talked about by those who are a part of developing a future Marvel movie. It remains to be seen if this means anything important about the Red Skull... for now.

Captain America 3 releases in theaters on May 6, 2016 and starts filming in Atlanta in spring 2015.
