One of those suits is a brand new look for James Rhodes' (Don Cheadle) War Machine. The red, white and blue look is similar to the Iron Patriot suit seen in the comic book universe. However, the Iron Patriot suit was worn by Norman Osborn for his own evil intentions. In the movie universe, Marvel Studios has taken some liberties and made changes to this version of the suit that War Machine wears for the good guys.
According to one of The Daily SuperHero's contacts, the movie version of the Iron Patriot suit has a little story behind it too. Rhodes, being a military man, is said to be a big fan of Captain America and shows this in the new Iron Man sequel. Since Iron Man and Cap are in the same movie universe, Marvel decided to have Rhodes show his appreciate and fandom for The First Avenger by painting his suit (or one of his War Machine suits) to match the colors of Captain America's costume.
Hence the Iron Patriot look for War Machine. Call it an homage to the super soldier by Rhodes.
Nothing has been confirmed by Marvel or Disney but the pieces seem to fit together to say this is one of the more solid rumors around. Plus, it gives Iron Man 3 another connection to Cap since it appears that the Mandarin has that tattoo of Cap's shield on the back of his neck. Remember that from the trailer? Iron Man 3 is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.
