BLACK PANTHER Pre-Sales Outpacing All Past Super Hero Movies; Tracking For $150 Million Domestic Opening

The buzz surrounding Marvel Studios' latest addition to their ever-growing cinematic universe is legit. So legit moviegoers are buying up pre-sale tickets at a faster rate than any previous super hero movie before it.

According to Fandango, via Deadline, BLACK PANTHER broke their initial 24-hour pre-sale record once ticket became available to pre-order. Now, it is also reported that BLACK PANTHER is outpacing all past super hero movies in pre-sales just two weeks before its release. The previous record holder was BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, which opened with $166 million.

Even Marvel Studios' billion-dollar moneymakers like THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, IRON MAN 3, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR did not reach the level of pre-sales that BLACK PANTHER is achieving at the moment. This isn't to say that BLACK PANTHER is a guarantee to be the studios' next $1 billion film, but it does help in speculating that it has a decent chance at that milestone number.

Hollywood critics saw the film this past week and their social media reactions were highly positive (see link below). This has generated even more anticipation for the movie and if you check your local theater's pre-sale seat availability right now, you might be disappointed to learn how all the best seats are already pre-sold out.

Initially, BLACK PANTHER was projecting for a domestic opening in the $100 million to $120 million range, but with interest in this movie at an all-time high, those numbers have moved even higher. Variety reports BLACK PANTHER could open as big as $150 million during the four-day President's Day holiday weekend. At this higher number, the film has a legit chance of dethroning DEADPOOL, which opened with $152 million in the same four-day holiday weekend frame just two years ago.

At this point, it seems easy to predict that BLACK PANTHER has a shot at the $900 million worldwide box office gross range, and if word-of-mouth propels it once it opens... $1 billion is not that far-fetched of a possibility, too.

BLACK PANTHER opens in the U.S. on February 16.
