Editorial: Marvel Studios has made some great movie posters in the past but, recently, it seems like they have lost their mojo with some of their poster work.
Most recently, it started with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 and actor Chris Pratt's awkward body pose as Peter Quill / Star-Lord in this poster.
This poster could have been great if it didn't have Pratt is such a weird looking pose. It's not a good look and if only his pelvis wasn't in such a "thrusting outward position" (a.k.a. pelvic sorcery) then this poster could have been great. At least it didn't hurt the sequel's box office as it is Marvel Studios' highest grossing film worldwide under $1 billion.
Next up is this SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING poster that has way too much going on.
It's a Photoshop mash-up mess; especially when this SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING poster was so perfect.
Oh well, gotta have Tony Stark and Iron Man all over at least one poster... but this poster above is a great example of when "less is more" which works well. Except when...
Finally, the newest Marvel Studios poster release, which is also the first for the film, is for BLACK PANTHER.
While I'm very excited for BLACK PANTHER next year, this poster does not look right. It looks like a really bad Photoshop job with either his face or the suit or perhaps a little of both. Sure, the studio is using the "less is more" concept here but it doesn't look right like it's a fan-made poster by an artist who is trying to breakthrough.
Perhaps the studio hired a new poster designer, but whatever the reason is it needs to stop and they need to reassess what the problem is with their posters. It could come down to a simple explanation which might be that since they're now producing three movies each year their attention to detail has fallen off a bit with their posters. Just as long as it doesn't affect the quality of their movies.
