GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Now Sits at $630 Million Worldwide

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is still doing big business in the box office as it has now passed the worldwide total of IRON MAN 2 ($623M) and currently sits with an estimated $630 million, globally. Its predecessor, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, finished its worldwide box office run with $773 million and Volume 2 looks to surpass the original's total soon.

In its second weekend of U.S. release, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 took in an estimated $63 million to bring its domestic total to $246 million. The 57-percent drop-off is normal for Marvel Studios' films and this was less of a drop than AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which dipped 59-percent in its second weekend of release. Volume 2 has already made more in the U.S. box office than THE INCREDIBLE HULK ($134M), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER ($176M), ANT-MAN ($180M), THOR ($181M), THOR: THE DARK WORLD ($206M) and DOCTOR STRANGE ($232M).

Overseas, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 took in an estimated $56 million bringing its International total to $384 million.

Worldwide, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is already Marvel Studios' ninth best grossing movie, out of 15 studio films released so far, with $630 million and it has made more than THE INCREDIBLE HULK ($263M), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER ($370M), THOR ($449M), ANT-MAN ($519M), IRON MAN ($585M) and IRON MAN 2 ($623M). Both THOR: THE DARK WORLD ($644M) and DOCTOR STRANGE $677M) will easily be eclipsed by next weekend.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 has already been green lit by Marvel Studios with James Gunn returning to write and direct to close out the trilogy for this iteration of the team. Gunn has hinted that Volume 3 could get released as soon as 2020, but the studio has not confirmed an official release date as of the publishing of this post.
