THE FLASH Season 3 Episode 18 Review: A Magician Never Reveals His Secrets

It’s no secret that THE FLASH has always struggled with its non-speedster villains. With the notable exceptions of Captain Cold and Heatwave, who proved to be so popular they were immediately shipped to a spinoff, most of the show’s bad guys have been one-offs with little to no depth or personality. It’s unfortunate but unsurprising then that Abra Kadabra, despite one of the most popular Flash foes from the comic books, was never really given the chance to fully unleash all the hammy glory that usually characterizes the villain during his debut. Kadabra’s purpose in the episode was solely to continue to tease the Savitar mystery, and perhaps most irritatingly, despite all the hullabaloo, we didn’t even learn anything new about Savitar. Fact is, there are only five episodes left in the season, and Savitar is still a virtual stranger to the audience. His identity, his backstory, and his motivations are all unclear. Not only is it almost impossible to imagine that the payoff from this reveal will justify how painfully long this subplot was dragged out, it leaves the show on a sour note on just before a month long hiatus.

But while Abra Kadabra didn’t get to show off his over-the- top personality this episode, we at least got to enjoy his very visually interesting abilities, which were different than anything we’d seen previously on the show. His seemingly endless array of tricks was enough of a challenge that it was believable seeing four supers go up against him. I particularly enjoyed seeing Cisco out on the field again; every time he gets an action scene his powers just get cooler and cooler. All of this raises the question of how long it will be until Cisco is out in the field permanently. I suspect that’s a matter that won’t be properly addressed until Season Four after the whole Savitar matter has been put to rest, but it’s getting hard and harder to justify Cisco sitting behind a computer screen when he’s proven time and again to be invaluable in battle.

Joe also had a few moments to shine this week, as the reality of Iris’s impending doom finally seemed to hit him and struggled with how far he was willing to go to save her. It’s a shame that he hasn’t had a whole lot to do this season, as Jesse L Martin proved once again he can make something as simple as sitting on the couch emotionally stirring. But while it was great to see Joe have more screen time, I do wish we’d gotten to see Iris react more to Kadabra offering to spill Savitar’s identity. Candice Patton wonderfully sells her role as the group’s conscience, but no one can be that selfless all the time. Almost every other episode Iris is telling someone that she doesn’t want them to jeopardize their morals to save her. It would refreshing to see her be the one to have a moment of doubt and be tempted to compromise her ethics if it meant she could live.

Of course, the moment that will have people talking the most over the break is Caitlin’s seemingly final transformation into Killer Frost. The symbolism of Caitlin literally having to die in order for her to fully be reborn as Killer Frost was a little on the nose, it certainly did make for a very dramatic ending to the episode. It was made even more effective by the show spending the last few minutes before she died having her tease HR and debate jello flavors with Cisco.

Usually, it feels cliche to show a person having a seemingly normal, every day conversation right before they unexpectedly die, but THE FLASH tends to have trouble letting itself breathe in between the big exciting moments. Having a quiet moment between characters (especially when Barry’s not present!) is rare enough that it didn’t take away from Caitlin’s sudden death. It was nice moment to end Caitlin’s tenure on Team Flash, showing just how close she was with her teammates. Now bring on the Killer Frost!
