Opinion: A True Marvel Studios and Marvel TV Crossover Won't Happen Until There's a New Marvel CEO

The year is different but the story is still the same. So many posts online are asking the question of when Marvel TV Netflix shows will finally crossover and show up in Marvel Studios' cinematic universe. This is due to IRON FIST debuting on Netflix on March 17 and it has once again sparked this topic.

To understand why a crossover probably isn't happening, like me first remind you about how the workings of Marvel is currently set up. Marvel's CEO is Ike Perlmutter, who oversees the following departments of the entertainment company: Marvel Comics, Marvel TV, Marvel Animation and Marvel Games. Marvel Studios is not included on this list because Perlmutter does not have any oversight when it comes to the studio. Marvel Studios is instead under the supervision and direction of Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.

This change occurred August 2015 for what Disney says was to streamline all their studios entities under Horn, who reports directly to Disney CEO Bob Iger. However, this re-alignment was due to an alleged rift between Perlmutter and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Here's the statement from Disney about the change:

"Marvel Studios is taking the next logical step in its integration with The Walt Disney Studios, joining Pixar and Lucasfilm in centralizing many of its film-related functions in Burbank, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito continuing to lead the Marvel Studios team reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn."

Regardless of what the reason was for this change, leadership overseeing Marvel Studios was forever changed moving it away from its co-existence with Marvel TV and the other Marvel departments residing under Perlmutter.

Which leads us into why you'll never see a Marvel TV (i.e. AGENTS OF SHIELD, INHUMANS and the Netflix shows) and Marvel Studios' films crossover despite the "It's all connected" mantra of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's because the one executive who oversees Marvel TV is probably bitter toward the other executive who runs Marvel Studios. And perhaps vice-versa. There is a hint of some bad blood between the two men; and to clarify, this is just my own opinion and I do not have internal information. But the writing is kind of on the wall.

So if you ever want to see this crossover, you better cross your fingers Marvel TV can move away from Perlmutter and get under Disney's guidance as Marvel Studios was able to accomplish. If this doesn't happen, there's a very low possibility of any crossover unless the Marvel CEO gets replaced; although he's been CEO since 2005, so that seems unlikely unless he retires since he is 74-years-old.

And if you need further proof my opinion here could be on-point, here's what Falcon actor Anthony Mackie said at Wizard World Cleveland this past weekend about any potential for a Marvel Studios and Marvel TV crossover, via ScreenGeek.

"Different universes, different worlds, different companies, different designs. Kevin Feige is very specific about how he wants the Marvel Universe to be seen in the film world. It wouldn’t work. It wouldn’t work at all."

That "different companies" part really lines up with my opinion in this post.
