Disney Rumored be Eyeing Up a Potential Netflix Purchase

The legacy of Bob Iger as Disney CEO will always be defined by his purchases of other major companies. In 2006, Pixar was bought for $7 billion. Then, in 2009, Marvel was purchased for $4 billion. Most recently, in 2012, Lucasfilm was bought for its valuable Star Wars franchise for $4 billion.

There's been rumors of Disney eyeing up other large company purchases over the past few years and the biggest rumor had a target placed on the toy manufacturer Hasbro. But this never became a reality.

Now, the big question is what will be Iger's Swan Song before his time as Disney CEO ends in 2018?

According to TechCrunch, the latest rumor has Disney potentially eyeing up a possible purchase of Netflix. This could be a reaction to AT&T agreeing to buy Time Warner for $85 billion creating one of the most powerful companies who can stand toe-to-toe against Disney, one of the world's largest entertainment conglomerates.

If any of this is true a Disney purchase of Netflix would not come cheap since the streaming service's market value stands at approximately $41 billion, according to Forbes in May 2016. Disney has found tremendous success with their Marvel shows on Netflix and this could add to the reason why the Mouse and Iger might be targeting this acquisition. Finally, this type of purchase could also lead to a succession plan when Iger retires with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings possibly filling the role.
