Never in the nearly 3 1/2 years of The Daily SuperHero's existence has there been so many 'short lists' for actors and directors of the same movie as there's been for MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN. Or will it be called SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN? Or FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN? Or SPIDER-MAN: THE NEW AVENGER?
Regardless of what the movie title for the next Spider-Man will be, there's been multiple reports about its casting process for Peter Parker. And multiple reports for which director will helm the highly anticipated project that brings the Web Slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Today, let's take a look at the recently rumored directors who may or may not be in contention for Spidey's next big screen adventure.
According to Deadline, the frontrunners to direct the next Spider-Man movie are Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies). If you haven't heard of these two, you're probably not alone. The hollywood trade site has previously reported that Melfi and Levine have been in the mix along with, "Pitch Perfect helmer Jason Moore; John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the directors/writers of the updated version of John Hughes’ Vacation; and Napoleon Dynamite and Don Verdean writer/director Jared Hess."
Also, per Collider, director Jon Watts (Cop Car) is in contention for the Spider-Man directing gig.
One name that is not listed is that of Drew Goddard (Daredevil series creator). Back in March, a report hit the web claiming Goddard was in the running as director and he was also writing the next Spider-Man movie. This report was shortly after Sony partnered up with Marvel Studios. The studio pairing put Goddard's work on a possible SINISTER SIX spin-off on hold. But now it seems like Goddard is not in contention to direct but there's still no word on if he's writing the script.
Nothing has been confirmed by Sony or Marvel so take all of this with a grain of salt right now. Spider-Man isn't shooting until 2016, at the earliest, for its summer 2017 release so both studios will surely take their time in finding the right director for the job in order to get the next Spider-Man movie back on track and become the $1 billion movie everyone knows it can be.
