Chris Evans Talks (in Circles) About His Future as CAPTAIN AMERICA

Chris Evans signed a 6-picture deal as Steve Rogers / Captain America. So far he's been in three (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier), with one coming next year (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and one which will start filming in spring 2015 (Captain America 3). This leaves one movie left after Captain America 3.

In the comic book universe, the Winter Soldier / Bucky Barnes takes up the shield and mantle as Captain America. Then, later this year in the comic book universe, Sam Wilson / Falcon will take up the shield and mantle of Captain America.

So let's assume that Evans' remaining film option on his 6-picture deal will be Avengers 3, and Cap could "die" in the threequel. In all honesty, Rogers probably won't die — so Evans can come back if he reaches a new contract deal with Marvel Studios — and instead Cap could get fed up and he may just walk away after Avengers 3. Thus causing either Bucky or Falcon to potentially become Cap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (And maybe just for one movie.)

While at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, Evans spoke in circles to MTV about his future as Captain America since he could be done with the role when his current contract is up.

“Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely dude,” Evans said. “I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”

Possible translation: Evans may take a break for a few years from Cap after his Marvel contract ends. But he seems to be leaving the door open to possibly sign a new deal with Marvel at some point after his contract ends.

Confused? That was probably Evans' goal (and usually Marvel's, too) all along.

Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1, 2015 and Captain America 3 releases on May 6, 2016.
