ANT-MAN: Re-Visiting the Plot From 2006's SDCC Panel Could Lead to Rudd and Gordon-Levitt Being Cast, Plus Wasp Rumor

A few days ago news spread that Marvel Studios was looking at actors Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and maybe one more actor name could be in the mix too) as the lead role in the 2015 Ant-Man film. Immediately after news broke, many websites posted a poll asking fans who they would prefer in the leading role. The majority voted for Rudd.

But what if both actors are cast? After the news hit, The Daily SuperHero tweeted out how there could be the slight possibility Rudd could be cast as Dr. Hank Pym while Gordon-Levitt could be cast as Scott Lang. While this was just a guess, it seems that there could be more truth to it than a simple speculation tweet.

Back in 2006, during Marvel Studios' first-ever San Diego Comic-Con panel, Ant-Man writer/director Edgar Wright was present and spoke about his Ant-Man film. IGN was in attendance and covered what Wright said at that SDCC panel, over eight years ago.

"'The idea of Ant-Man is how kick-ass it would be to be small,' Wright said, via IGN's post.
"The film, still very early in production, looks to incorporate two incarnations of the tiny Marvel hero: Henry Pym and Scott Lang. 'We wanted it to be about the guy who steals the suit,' said Wright, further describing the story as a 'Cold War handover.' He sees the movie encompassing the 60s Ant-Man as well as recent incarnations. In terms of the costume Ant-Man will wear, Wright said, 'I like the diving bell kind of outfit. It's a way to get retro cool into a contemporary story.'"

Obviously it needs to be said that since this was all said over eight years ago, much has changed with Marvel Studios and especially in their cinematic universe. In 2006, Marvel Studios probably didn't even realize they were going to build their superhero films toward a giant ensemble movie with The Avengers.

However, it also needs to be stated that even though Wright's script has probably been re-written 100-times over by now, it could still maintain some of the basic plot lines that it had back in 2006. Not to mention the fact Wright specifically spoke about how "we wanted it to be about the guy who steals the suit" at the 2006 panel. In other words, both Lang and Pym could still be in the current script of Ant-Man.

With it being confirmed Pym is not the creator of Ultron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—due to the robotic villain showing up in The Avengers: Age of Ultron which precedes Ant-Man's release—it sounds like both Pym and Lang could be the main protagonist and antagonist, respectfully. This could also mean both Rudd and Gordon-Levitt will be in Ant-Man. Lots of theory here but nothing that doesn't not make logical sense at the same time.

Finally, a little rumor about another Ant-Man casting possibility has hit the Internet (via SuperHeroMoviesNews.com) saying female actor Rashida Jones could be in contention to play Pym's love interest Janet van Dyne, also know as the Wasp.
