IRON MAN 3 Has 2nd Biggest Opening Weekend Ever: Love it or Hate it, Marvel Studios Takes the Genre to a New Level of Creativity

Iron Man 3 has kicked off the summer movie season in a huge way by now owning the second largest domestic opening weekend ever spot with approximately $175 million this weekend (total is estimated since actual numbers don't come out until Monday). Iron Man 3 may have fallen short of The Avengers' $207 million record opening last summer but Marvel Studios and Disney easily have their second $1 billion worldwide blockbuster, in a row, on their hands.

Adding this estimated, and these weekend estimates are pretty accurate within a couple million, domestic total to Iron Man 3's already huge International haul of $504 million and the threequel already has an impressive worldwide total of $680 million. Another estimate projects Iron Man 3 to have a final domestic tally in the $400 million range and a worldwide total near $1.3 billion. In other words, Marvel Studios will most likely do everything in their power to retain Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark moving forward. (Like we said in the past, Disney will probably give Downey a Pirates of the Caribbean-like bounty that they give Johnny Depp.)

Some of the fan base has loved the movie, hence all the cash money it is making worldwide, while others hate it. It's fair to have your own opinion but even this writer was on the fence after seeing Iron Man 3 for the first time on Thursday night. It took a second viewing on Friday afternoon to really fall in love with this film. Maybe it was due to the different feel of the film having a new director, but there is definitely a lot to process after your initial viewing, so if you too feel like you're on the fence with the threequel... go out to the theater and see it again. It's very probable that you too will love the film after the second time through.

The biggest hurdle for many who hate this movie is obviously going to be the Mandarin twist. In order to not get into spoilers about this—for those who still haven't seen it yet (seriously, what's the delay?)—this is a movie adaptation of the comic books. Movies rarely match what was written. This is a pretty much a fact. So instead of getting upset over the Mandarin twist, appreciate the brilliance of what Marvel did. They took a half-century old character and updated him with a twist.

It's that simple and it works. Don't forget the respect Sir Ben Kingsley deserves for his brilliant portrayal of two very distinctive and different characters.

While Iron Man 3 has some nitpicking issues the fan base will dig into, one thing is certain about this movie and it's that Marvel Studios has taken the genre to a new level of creativity. Placing such a big twist in this movie with one of it's iconic villains was a huge risk. Plus, a plot twist of this magnitude hasn't been seen in a superhero film either. Yeah, The Dark Knight Trilogy has its own twists and turns but nothing involving a major comic book character.

While Iron Man 3 definitely has a different feel to it, mainly due to having a new director with a different auteur theory, the risks taken in the story shows that the genre is still growing, developing and going no where. Superhero movies are here to stay and, specifically, Marvel Studios continues to challenge itself by making movies different than their past ones.
