SDCC 2019: Here's the Best Stuff the AVENGERS: ENDGAME Writers Revealed During Their Panel

SAN DIEGO, Cali. -- You know you've made it to the big time when you're just a pair of faceless screenwriters who now wield the power to take over a panel in Hall H at Comic-Con. This is exactly what happened to Marvel Studios writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. These are the guys who really shaped the Marvel Cinematic Universe by writing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

The duo first spoke about a scene from Infinity War during the fight on Titan. Doctor Strange originally was to send Thanos through a trippy mind fuck where he would face his past crimes and be placed in front of the Living Tribunal, who see Thanos as being guilty. The scene was apparently filmed, but cut because detouring such an important fight for a mind trip scene slowed the pacing during this sequence.

Next, the guys told a story how Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige gave them a note simply saying to "stick the landing." Meaning no matter what they wrote, they needed to make sure the ending was solid.

Back in 2016, the writers said how they reached a point where nobody was happy with how the Thor storyline was playing out and it was one of the toughest times as the pressure mounted to get Thor's story right. There were many pressure-filled meetings of the minds to get get it right. (They did it.)

Another tidbit revealed was how Smart Hulk was supposed to appear at the end of Infinity War. Although based on how Infinity War was playing out already, it felt like a waste to have Smart Hulk appear being too heroic when the story was supposed to feel sad and helpless at the end of the film so he was pushed into Endgame. When the idea of "Five year later" hit during the development of Endgame, the introduction of Smart Hulk became so much easier.

Finally, Markus and McFeely discussed ideas about Rocket Raccoon talking quantum physics with Jane Foster as well as how Thanos would try to intimidate the Avengers with the head of Captain America. Both were cut and might have more details revealed when the movie is released on Blu Ray.
