Disney Fires Director James Gunn From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

A bombshell of a story has hit during San Diego Comic-Con International 2018 and it is not the reveal of a new movie. Instead it is the the firing of writer and director James Gunn from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 by Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter, over some offensive tweets from about a decade ago.

A very vocal political persona on Twitter, Gunn has angered many of President Donald Trump's supporters since he took Office. Those supporters scoured Gunn's backlog of tweets and found some decade-old posts that are pretty terrible and in very bad taste. We will not share them here, either, so you'll have to Google it if you really need to read them for yourself.

Gunn claims that was the old version of him and not him today. People really do grow up and change as life goes on, but that does not give anyone a free pass... especially in the eyes of Disney.

Disney Studios head Alan Horn has officially said:

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."

Gunn has released the following official statement regarding the matter, via ABC:

"My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.

"Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all."

The  important thing to take from this is to not post stupid shit, regardless of if it is for comedy purposes, on social media because someone will find it and use it against you to bring you down. Also, if you are trending to celebrity status, then delete your current social media accounts and start anew with fresh accounts. Although, nothing really goes away once posted to the Internet.

There is no word on who will take over GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 as Gunn had just finished his latest draft of the movie and the film was set to begin production by the end of this year, or early next year for a potential May 2020 release. Do not be surprised if this film gets delayed as a new filmmaker will be brought on in the coming months to take the helm and possibly rework the story Gunn had already written.
