A Quick Preview of AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 3

Last season of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. ended with several characters in intriguing positions. Grant Ward is going deeper into the dark side as possible leader of Hydra. Jemma Simmons got swallowed up by the alien Kree stone. Phil Coulson got his arm cut off by Mack to save his life (possibly the most holy crapballs moment of the whole finale), and Agent May left on a much needed vacation to possibly rekindle her relationship with her ex-husband.

Season 3, premiering tomorrow on ABC, brings Coulson and his crew back together again. Skye and Coulson began assembling a team of Inhumans to the SHIELD team. It seems the series is diving more into comic book territory by starting to adapt a new team which sounds very much like the Secret Warriors (and was hinted via a promo poster over the summer). SHIELD has become increasingly popular since its premiere in 2013 and I predict it to bring more viewers as it dives into the Inhuman mythology that will also be seen at the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the Inhumans arc is definitely fascinating, many fans seem most interested in their favorite rag-tag gang. The death of Agent 33 appears to have made Ward fall off his already wobbly wagon and sent him on a warpath, which may send him straight into the path of Simmons’ disappearance and may be the mystery that captures the first episode of the season. Was she eaten? Transported? Trapped in the stone?

And will Leo Fitz discover what happened to his other half? Will Skye and Ward face off soon for an inevitable showdown, which many are looking forward to (me included)? Only time will tell.

Let's not forget about Skye, who is now calling herself Daisy. She will have her hands full keeping new team members from each others' throats and with her continuation of learning to hone her new powers.

While the first season started out kind of campy, it ended on a strong note as they incorporated Hydra into the storyline. The second season definitely matured as it brought in newcomers. I predict the third season will show the characters dealing with new unknown aliens, but being more prepared now that they are fully integrated into their roles, especially with Skye fitting in as a seasoned agent and Mack as her partner. Plus, Coulson seemingly getting his groove back as Director of SHIELD.

However, I’m betting on this season not to be completely smooth sailing for the team. Tune into ABC on Tuesday September 29 at 9 p.m. Eastern.
