When Warner Bros. announced actor Heath Ledger would play the Joker in writer/director Christopher Nolans' The Dark Knight, a lot (and that's being courteous) of the Batman fan base had a negative reaction. Fast-forward to the impressions of fans after the movie's release and there were hardly any haters to be found.

Recently, something similar happened when Warner Bros. announced actor Ben Affleck as Batman in director Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman, and fans will have to wait until summer 2015 to see if they were once again wrong about hating on the casting. Ledger did prove that the right casting and performance, regardless of fan reaction, can change the game for movie villains.

And this is exactly what Loki actor Tom Hiddleston said to Entertainment Weekly when talking about his own portrayal of a villainous character.

"Heath Ledger’s performance changed the game. He certainly changed it for me. I’ve never seen such an electrifying performance before or since. There was something incredibly compelling about that film because of his performance in it."

Even though Hiddleston didn't exactly say Ledger was his inspiration it is certainly implied in his quote and that inspiration shows in his own Loki performances in Thor, The Avengers and reportedly in Thor: The Dark World (based on reviews from its United Kingdom release), as well.

Hiddleston's Loki is every bit as mesmerizing as Ledger's Joker. But Ledger's performance has earned the late actor a legendary status for all-time since he won an Academy Award. This isn't saying Hiddleston isn't as good but he is also changing the game by being the villain who steals the show in not one, not two, but three Marvel Studios films now.

And don't forget that Loki is so loved that there is a campaign to get him his own movie and there's been some talk about a potential Loki solo movie behind closed doors. Hiddleston is definitely changing the game now too.
