Dan Aykroyd has been talking Ghostbusters 3 over the past few weeks and it's sounding more and more like the old team may not be a part of a new film.
Back in May, on Larry King Now, Aykroyd said there will be a new cast of Ghostbusters.
“We’re going to have to cast... four new Ghostbusters," Aykroyd said. "We need four new Columbia students."
Later in the interview, he said new research is being done for the movie.
“It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University.” Aykroyd said. “Basically there’s research being done that…I can say that the world or our dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width, and time, become threatened by some of the research that is being done. And Ghostbusters, new Ghostbusters have to come and [solve] the problem.”
More recently, Aykroyd was talking Ghostbusters with WGN Morning News (via ComicBook.com) and again confirmed a new cast and new technology.
“Yeah, [a new cast is] going to happen," Aykroyd said. "In fact, it’s so far along now that there are industrial trade secrets in the script that I can’t even talk about, billion dollar trade secrets. I can’t say anything about them.
“Some of the stuff, the props, the new equipment, the story, what’s going on in physics today is going to help us a lot… our plotting, and we’re going to recruit a whole new generation of Ghostbusters.”
When Aykroyd was asked if he, or other original cast members, would be back to reprise his role of Dr. Ray Stanz, his answer was simple and to the point.
So what does this mean? Most likely his answer implies Ghostbusters 3 may not be a sequel but a full-blown reboot as J.J. Abrams previously did in rebooting Star Trek. Abrams made Star Trek relevant to bring in a new audience, as well staying somewhat true to the original films to bring in the audience of the older films.
Fans of the original films may not like to hear this but neither did Star Trek fans when it was announced Abrams was rebooting the franchise. At this point, the Ghostbusters franchise might be best suited with a complete overhaul and reboot in order to finally get a green light for production by Sony and Columbia Pictures.
Let's just see Ghostbusters back up on the big screen as long as the script is solid, the director is wisely chosen and the cast is able to effectively portray a new generation of the paranormal investigators.
