Joe Quesada has been Marvel's Chief Creative Officer since 2010 and he helped shape the modern Marvel Universe as it's editor-in-chief from 2000-2009. Recently, he was at the Kapow! Comic Convention in London answering questions about Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
Now that The Avengers has re-defining the movie franchise into what is considered a super franchise everyone is talking Marvel, their upcoming films and potential new characters to be introduced on the big screen.
Per a ComicBookMovie.com report, Quesada has confirmed "to the best of his knowledge" Namor: The Sub-Mariner is film property of Marvel Studios.
Wikipedia puts the significance of this news in better perspective since Namor has run around with multiple teams in his comic history when it says, "He has served directly with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, the Invaders, and the X-Men as well as serving as a foil to all of them on occasion."
There has been speculation the Sub-Mariner's rights could have been returned to Marvel Studios after a past deal expired with a studio who had the licensing rights to the character, in the past.
This seems to put a bigger stamp on the fact Namor could be seen in The Avengers or even in a solo movie, however, Quesada also said Marvel Studios' "main focus is on developing 'tentpole' movies rather than those focusing on obscure characters."
Is Namor obscure and best suited as an additional character in a future Avengers movie and/or can he hold down his own film too?
The answer to that question will be monitored for as Marvel Studios is soon to announce two new additional films—one rumored to be confirmed as Ant-Man—to the already planned Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 in the coming months.
Stay tuned. Things could get really interesting when Marvel Studios unveils its plans.
